Aurora Names New Police Chief
Daniel J. Oates has been named Aurora Chief of Police for the city of 303,000 people. Oates arrives from Ann Arbor, Michigan, where in 2001 he was appointed Chief of Police and later named Safety Services Administrator. Prior to his position in the Ann Arbor police force, Oates served 21 years in the New York Police Department, ultimately becoming the Deputy Chief of the patrol borough Brooklyn South and supervising 3,000 police officers and civilians. He also served as the Commanding Officer of the Intelligence Division and the Commanding Officer of the Legal Bureau, where he served as chief counsel and managed the 85 attorney law office for the NYPD. Oates will begin his duties by the end of November.


Young Stapleton Resident Wins At Celebration for Young Entrepreneurs
Denver Stapleton resident Jordan Shelton of Step by Step was one of four winners at the Young Americans Center’s 4th annual Celebration for Young Entrepreneurs. The Celebration took place at the Belmar Center in Lakewood on Sept. 15. A Youth Business Showcase featuring the businesses of the winners and finalists kicked-off the evening.

Shelton created Step by Step when he recognized a need for businesses in the Stapleton community to advertise their locations to the mostly new residents. With competitive rates, a reputation for being "honest and hardworking", a catchy slogan of "we fly, they buy", as well as impressive results for his client businesses, Shelton was soon hiring other young people to help him.
Shelton not only received a cash award, but was also paired with a Presenting Mentor – a prominent business person from the Denver community who presented his award. His mentor was Carl Williams of Carl Williams and Associates.


Rose Community Foundation Announces Contest Winners
Jamie Lange and Lauren Fellows are the winners of Rose Community Foundation’s 2005 Rosh Hashanah Greeting Card Contest. This is the eighth year of the contest, which invites students to create the artwork and text of a card that Rose Community Foundation sends to several thousand friends of the Foundation in celebration of the Jewish New Year.

Eleven-year-old Jamie Lange created the artwork that appears on the cover. She is a sixth grader at Denver Academy, and would like to be a National Geographic photographer. Thirteen-year-old Lauren Fellows wrote a letter to God and Lauren, an eighth grader at Nevin Platt Middle School, would like to be a marine biologist when she grows up.

The winners directed $500 provided by Rose Community Foundation to the charities of their choice.


Winners Announced For The Elvin R. Caldwell, Sr. District 8 Youth Essay Contest
Denver City Councilwoman Elbra Wedgeworth, Dist. 8, announced the names of the winners for the 4th Annual Elvin R. Caldwell, Sr. District 8 Youth Essay Contest. A panel comprised of various District 8 community leaders selected the individual essay winners from elementary schools. Over 100 essays were submitted to the judges.

Elementary school winners were Trey Pernell of Polaris at Ebert School for 1st place and Flanders Lorton of Polaris at Ebert School for 2nd place. High school winners were Marcus Meadows at East High School for 1st place and Sasha Reschektko at East High School for 2nd place.

Special recognition went to East High School Principal Cathy Callum who received the Neighborhood Partner Award.

The first place winners received a $500 scholarship and the school they attend will received a $500 grant. Essay Contest Runner-Ups received $200 scholarships. All Essay contest participants will be given a certificate of recognition along with passes to local cultural facilities.



Kroenke, Grant, And Ritchie To Be Inducted Into Tourism Hall Of Fame

Denver’s tourism industry will be honoring the city’s sports empire, the city’s largest event, and one of its largest universities at their annual Tourism Hall of Fame dinner on Dec. 1. Being inducted into the Tourism Hall of Fame will be: E. Stanley Kroenke, owner of Kroenke Sports Enterprises; Pat Grant, president & CEO of the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo; and Daniel L. Ritchie, chancellor of University of Denver. The event will be held at the Colorado Convention Center and serves as a fundraiser for the Denver Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau Foundation, which provides scholarships for students pursuing higher education in the field of tourism.

Founded in 1909, the Denver Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau is a nonprofit trade association that contracts with the City of Denver to market Denver as a convention and leisure destination, increasing economic development in the city, creating jobs, and generating taxes. Tourism is the second largest industry in Denver, generating $2.3 billion in annual spending and supporting 65,000 jobs. The Foundation awarded more than $50,000 in scholarships last year to 10 Colorado students.
