Five Points Business Owner Celebrates 80th Birthday
Zona Moore, owner of Zona’s Tamales, has been a business owner in the Five Points district for more than 40 years. Moore celebrated her 80th birthday in October with family and friends.

Daughter Reta Ward planned the event, which was held at the Radisson Stapleton Hotel, with 14 other siblings. More than 125 guests attended the special celebration, which included five generation of family members. Entertainment was proved by family members. Moore was was born in Tyler, Texas and moved to Denver in 1960 with her husband. Well known in the Five Points community, Ms Moore is still working at her restaurant.

Governing Magazine Names Mayor Hickenlooper One Of Eight "Public Officials Of The Year"
Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper is among the winners of Governing Magazine’s Public Official of the Year Awards for 2005. The eight national honorees were profiled in the November issue of Governing magazine, which describes Hickenlooper as "a catalyst for uniting a region and revitalizing a city." Hickenlooper worked to persuade voters to approve a comprehensive new metropolitan transit system by helping to galvanize a broad coalition of local governments and business leaders to support a ballot initiative. Winners also include the governor of Arkansas, New York City’s health director, a Florida state senator, the chief information officer of Michigan, Louisiana’s commissioner of administration, the executive of Nassau County, New York and the superintendent of Boston public schools.

This year’s group of recipients is the twelfth to be honored by Governing’s annual awards program, which was launched in 1994. Governing, now 18 years old, is an independent national magazine devoted to coverage of state and local government, and has a circulation of 85,000. The award winners were honored at a dinner Nov. 9 in Washington, DC, hosted by the magazine and by the corporate sponsors of the awards: Northrop Grumman IT, CGI-AMS, HP, Siemens Corporation, and Unisys.


Haven Moses Receives First Annual Distinguished Community Service Award
The Denver Broncos Alumni Association awarded the first annual Distinguished Community Service Award to Haven Moses, a dynamic community activist and member of the Broncos Ring of Fame and Colorado Sports Hall of Fame.

Haven Moses received recognition as the first recipient of the Distinguished Community Service Award during the Denver Broncos Alumni Association meeting in October. The presentation of the award by Odell Barry, President of the Association, will take place at INVESCO Field at Mile High and will be aired during the Denver Broncos home game against the New York Jets Sunday, Nov. 20.

Moses was recognized for his long tradition of working to help young people gain a strong foundation from which to grow and succeed throughout their lives. Over the years, he has worked with diverse organizations, including the Police Activities League, the Archdiocese of Denver, and as the former Executive Director for the Seed of Home Charitable Trust.

Moses continues to give back in numerous ways, and is a current member of the board for The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver, HealthOne Alliance, Arrupe Jesuit High School, and the University of Northern Colorado Foundation (UNC).


Women’s Bean Project Welcome New Board Members
The Women’s Bean Project welcomes three new members to its board of directors: Michele Conklin, Executive Director, Planning and Marketing, Porter Adventist Hospital; Lisa Cutter, Principal, Cutter Communications; and Michele Wells, Principal, Wells Communications, Inc.

The Women’s Bean Project employs women from backgrounds of chronic unemployment and poverty, and helps them develop the work and interpersonal skills needed to function independently in the workplace and community. Within the context of a viable business, these women earn a steady paycheck, develop solid transferable work skills, and strengthen self-confidence and personal responsibility.

Denverite Elected To Girl Scouts National Board Of Directors
Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) elected Denver marketer Kip Hughes to serve on their national board of directors as a member at large.

GSUSA announced Hughes’s position at the 2005 Girl Scout National Council Session/50th Convention held in Atlanta in October.

The organization also elected its first Latina chair of the national board of directors, Patricia Diaz Dennis, an accomplished attorney and a former Girl Scout.

Hughes has been an active volunteer with the Denver-based Girl Scouts-Mile Hi Council ever since serving on their board of directors from 1991 to 2002. The council honored her as a Woman of Distinction in 1999. She is currently a public relations consultant and serves as counsel for Johnston Wells Public Relations.

The new national board members will serve the organization over the next three years, a period during which the Girl Scout movement will continue its historical mission to build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.



Aurora Education Foundation Welcomes New Director
The Aurora Education Foundation has appointed Angela Hutton-Howard as its new executive director. Hutton-Howard has nearly 20 years of experience in the business, government and non-profit fields. Most recently, she served as executive director of the Foundation for Educational Excellence, which supports innovative educational opportunities in the public schools in the northeast metro area. She also serves on numerous community boards and commissions. Hutton-Howard holds a law degree from the University of Denver College of Law. She is a licensed attorney and real estate agent in the state of Colorado.

Donor Awarness Council Appoints New Executive Director
The Donor Awarness Council is thrilled to announce the appointment of Charlene Hill as executive director of the Donor Awareness Council. Hill has served as interim executive director since Aug. 1. Prior to this appointment, Hill was an independent consultant for the Denver Public Schools' Task Force on Early Education and School Readiness. She developed collaborative relationships and supported the work of a 25 member task force in developing effective policies for universal preschool programs in metropolitan Denver. Hill was also executive vice-president for the Urban League of Metropolitan Denver, and served for a time as interim CEO of that organization.

Hubert A. Farbes Appointed To Denver Health Board Of Directors
Mayor John Hickenlooper has appointed Hubert A. Farbes Jr. to the Denver Health and Hospital Authority Board of Directors. The Denver City Council recently confirmed his appointment.

Farbes is an attorney in the Brownstein Hyatt and Farber law firm. He focuses on construction, natural resource, regulatory, and public utility law. His appointment is effective immediately. He will serve a five-year term.

Farbes serves on the governing boards of the Stapleton Foundation, the Nature Conservancy of Colorado, and the Center of the American West at the University of Colorado. He is a past President of the Denver Bar Association and a three-time member of the Colorado Bar Association Board of Governors.


Smithsonian To Honor Bill Daniels
The Sea-Air Operations gallery at the National Air and Space Museum's flagship building on the National Mall in Washington D.C. was dedicated to the memory of naval aviator, entrepreneur and philanthropist Bill Daniels. The honor is in recognition of a $3 million legacy grant by the Daniels Fund, the largest charity in the Rocky Mountain region. The Daniels Fund was founded by Bill Daniels in 1997, three years before his death at age 79. The dedication at a private event on Monday, Nov. 28.

Daniels, a graduate of the New Mexico Military Institute, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1941. He was a fighter pilot aboard the aircraft carriers U.S.S. Intrepid and U.S.S. Sangamon during World War II and served as an intelligence officer during the Korean War. Daniels was awarded the Bronze Star and the Air Medal, and he retired from the Navy in 1958 with the rank of commander.
