Happy Holidays - From The Editor

We at the Urban Spectrum have taken a moment to reflect on all that has happened this year, and all we’re trying to cram into our busy lives between now and Dec. 31. At one of the busiest times of the year, surprisingly, we decided to slow down and reflect on all that really matters to us.

It wasn’t difficult to conclude that if we celebrate the principles of the holidays (family, faith, and a little fun thrown in for good measure), preparation shouldn’t be that time consuming. Hence, stress levels will be lower.

Personally, I’ve decided that I don’t have to make every holiday gathering. If I’d rather be at home with family and friends, counting my blessings, I can choose to do as little or as much as I want. I can even go caroling (although I’ve promised my friends that I’ll just hum quietly). That decision alone has already lifted quite a weight from my shoulders. I suggest we all make that determination for ourselves. If Oprah can pick and choose, so can we.
Ultimately, coming together with family and friends is at the heart of the holidays, but above all, it is the season of giving. So, I urge each of you to remember those still struggling to reclaim their lives in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. It has been months since the hurricane and flood, but the suffering continues. I will make this my first priority this season and in the coming year.

At the close of 2005, I think we can all agree that Hurricane Katrina was the biggest story of the year. But while media coverage begins to wane, those of us at the Urban Spectrum have pledged to keep the spotlight on the dozens of stories that continue to emerge--those that lend a voice to the disenfranchised, as well of those of hope and triumph. If we don’t, who will?

So, during this holiday season, we also wish each of you the best of what Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah and other observances has to offer. We appreciate you and look forwarding to continuing to spread the stories about people of color.
