The Girl Scouts Mile Hi Council presents the 8th Annual Girl Scouts 5K &1K Walk/Run, a day of fun and fitness for all families throughout the metro area on Sunday, Oct. 23 at Washington Park in Denver. Babars World Tour Visits The Denver Art Museum
The Denver Art Museum will host a day-long celebration for the release of Babars World Tour, which coincides with Babar author Laurent de Brunhoffs 80th birthday and the 75th anniversary of his beloved elephant. Families are invited to join Babar on their own world tour of the museums collections on Saturday, Nov. 19, with exciting activities available on every floor from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Author Laurent de Brunhoff will visit the museum to sign his books from 1 to 3 p.m. General museum admission is free for Colorado residents on Saturday, and there is no charge for the special activities. Laurent is the son of Jean de Brunhoff and Cecile de Brunhoff, the creators of the original Babar stories. Since 1946, Laurent has continued to bring life to the beloved elephant family created more than a decade before.

The Third Gay and Gray in the West Conference, Living The Life We Dream, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Denver Merchandise Mart. Colorado Historical Society Hosts Fun Childrens Halloween Events
The Colorado Historical Society is hosting a myriad of fun and exciting events throughout the Front Range, including exhibits, music, lectures, performances, childrens entertainment, tours and treks, and fundraising events. Some of these events will run into the New Year, but some are for a limited time.
This Halloween, children ages three to10 will enjoy Halloween stories, games, fortunes, historic decorations, treats, and crafts at the Byers-Evans House Museum (1310 Bannock St., Denver), Oct. 29 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Adult tickets are $6, children over six $1.50, children under six free. On Oct. 29 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Colorado History Museum (1300 Broadway, Denver), kids can begin their preparations for Halloween by trying on the face of Colorado through mask making, props, and old-fashioned clothes, and see themselves as a cowboy, a miner, an engineer, and lots of other choices. Expansion And Events At The Denver Art Museum
The Denver Art Museum, located on 13th Ave. between Broadway and Bannock St., is currently undergoing a major expansion that will nearly double the size of the existing Museum and provide valuable space for permanent collections and traveling exhibitions when it opens in the fall of 2006. Designed by renowned architect Daniel Libeskind, the 146,000-square-foot Frederic C. Hamilton Building spans the length of a city block and is an explosion of angular forms clad in titanium. It will be situated directly south of the existing North Building. The two structures are connected by a bridge that extends from the new building's unique prow over 13th Ave. The Hamilton Building will house three changing exhibition spaces and feature new galleries for modern and contemporary, African, Oceanic, and Western American art.
The Denver Art Museum is still open to the public and a variety of exhibits are on display. Their upcoming special exhibit, Building Outside the Box: Creating the New Denver Art Museum, opens Oct. 15. Continuing special exhibits include Blanket Statements, Floating Time, Heaven and Home, Cheyenne Visions II, and New Classics.

Denver Museum Of Miniatures, Dolls And Toys Hosts New Exhibits
The Denver Museum of Miniatures, Dolls and Toys will host five new exhibits through October. The museum is located in the historic Pearce-McAllister Cottage, 1880 Gaylord St. Celebrate Barbie and How Does Your Garden Grow? will run through Oct. 31. The Circus Is In Town, a new permanent exhibit, is a three-ring circus measuring four feet by eight feet under the big tops. Home For The Holidays will run Nov. 1 through March 1, and 50 Years Of Peanuts! a tribute to Charles Schultz, will run Nov. 1 through May 1.

RAAP To Host PSSW Classes
The Rape Assistance and Awareness Program (RAAP) offers Personal Safety Skills for Women (PSSW) classes. Classes are attended and taught exclusively by women. Participants learn physical, verbal, and psychological protection techniques to fend off an attack. The course is appropriate for all women and girls 13 and older, regardless of strength or physical ability.
The classes will be held at the Montview Presbyterian Church, 1980 Dahlia St., Denver, on Nov. 7, 9, 14 and 16, from 6 p. m. to 9 p.m. The class runs all four dates for a total of 12 hours of empowerment. Cost is $50 for Denver residents and $55 for non-residents. Scholarships are available. This program can also be modified in length and adapted according to the needs of private groups.
GoGirlGo! Grant And Educational Program Seeks Applications For Sports Award
The Womens Sports Foundations GoGirlGo! program is dedicated to the development and funding of girls sports/ physical activity programs that combine athletic instruction and programming with the delivery of educational information aimed at reducing risk behaviors that threaten the health and social advancement of girls in the third to eighth grades. GoGirlGo! is accepting applications to assist sports and physical activity programs seeking to add new or expanded program participation opportunities for an underserved population of girls, particularly those who are economically disadvantaged and have a high incidence of health-risk behaviors. Do Something is a national nonprofit organization that trains, funds, and mobilizes young people to strengthen and improve their communities. The Brick Awards program provides grants to youth in the areas of community building, health, and the environment.
A $5,000 higher education scholarship and a $5,000 community grant (to be directed by the award winner to the nonprofit organization of his or her choice) will be awarded to six young people under the age of 18. A $10,000 community grant will be awarded to three young people ages 19 to 25. The application deadline is Nov. 1.

The State Farm Companies Foundation announces the availability of service-learning grants for youth. The grants support the planning and implementation of projects for National Youth Service Day 2006, April 21-23 and ongoing services throughout the year. The program offers 100 grants of $1,000 each. To be eligible to apply, applicants must meet the following requirements: 1) be a resident of the 50 states or the District of Columbia, and 2) be a certified teacher or professor who currently teaches in a public, private, faith-based, charter, or higher education institution, or 3) be a school-based service-learning coordinator whose primary role is to coordinate service-learning projects, or 3) be a youth between the ages of 5 and 25. The William T. Grant Foundation is seeking proposals to support intervention research to improve youth-serving organizations. Funding Opportunity For Service Projects Tied To Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday
The Corporation for National and Community Service announced that it expects to award $500,000 in competitive grants to support volunteer service projects tied to the 2006 Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. The grants are designed to mobilize more Americans to serve their communities on the King Holiday, which takes place next year on January 16. For this years competition, applicants must explicitly address how they will improve the lives of disadvantaged youth, either by engaging them in service to others or by providing services that meet their needs.
Unlike in past years, when King Day grants were made for a single year, this years grants will cover a period of up to three years. Funding for the second and third years will be contingent upon satisfactory performance in the previous year, the availability of funds, and other criteria established in the award agreement. NOBEL/Women Offers Symposium On Obesity And Health Disparities In African American Community
The National Organization of Black Elected Legislative Women (NOBEL/Women) will host a health symposium to address the impact of obesity and health disparities in the African American Community. The symposium will be held Thursday and Friday, Oct. 13 and 14, at the Timbers Hotel at 4411 Peoria St. in Denver. State Representative Rosemary Marshall, D-Denver, is the chairwoman of the symposium. Denver Botanic Gardens At Chatfield Hosts 17th Annual Pumpkin Festival
Thousands of pumpkins will be ripe for the picking at the Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfields five-acre pumpkin patch (8500 Deer Creek Canyon Rd., Littleton) on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Many activities will surround the search for that perfect jack o lantern or pumpkin pie gourd, including hayrides and vendors offering unique crafts and concessions. Barrel train rides will delight the kids, while adults can peruse the 1860s historic homestead located on the Chatfield grounds.

The Merc Hosts Screening Of Films On Haiti
On Sunday Oct. 23, the Mercury Café, located at 2199 California St. in Denver, will be hosting a short film festival on films on Haiti, including the film Unfinished Business. Unfinished Business analyzes the current political and economic situation in Haiti as well as the consequences of the 2004 coup which removed President jean Bertrand Aristide from power. Other film explore the 1804 Haitian Revolution in which the African slaves defeated the troops pf napoleon Bonaparte, making Haiti the second republic in the Western Hemisphere.

21st Annual Colorado Workplace Equity Coalition Conference To Be Held This October
The Colorado Workplace Equity Coalition (CWEC) will present its 21st Annual Conference this October. This years theme is Measuring Workplace Equity's Return on Investment.
The featured speaker for the morning session is Craig B. Clayton, Sr., Founder and CEO, Sp@rtacus Analytics Group. The Conference will take place Thursday October 13 at the PPA Events Center, 2015 Decatur Street in Denver. The morning session will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a Networking Breakfast, and will continue with a full day of workshops and discussions. Other speakers include: Marvin R. Strictly Business Productions Dance & Ensemble will present In Dedication Of, an original theatrical dance production, Thursday, Oct. 13 through Saturday, Oct. 15, at Cleo Parker Robinsons Dance Theatre, 119 Park Avenue West in Denver. Energy Outreach Colorado To Host Energy Assistance Event
On Thursday, Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Energy Outreach Colorado will present a free Energy Assistance Expo to help Colorado families and seniors prepare for skyrocketing heating bills. Volunteers from Energy Outreach Colorado, Colorado LEAP and Xcel Energy will help hundreds of residents complete energy assistance applications, make bill payment arrangements, and learn about energy-saving techniques and home weatherization services. This is a free opportunity for families, seniors and disabled people to fill out and submit LEAP applications, which will be among the first considered when energy assistance funds become available in November. Attendees must bring proof of income and their most recent energy bill. If appropriate, attendees also must bring a rent receipt and public assistance award letter. No funding will be distributed at this event. This event will be held at the Denver Department of Human Services at 1200 Federal Blvd. in Denver.

International Institute For Indigenous Resource Management Presents 2005 Indigenous Film And Arts Festival
The International Institute for Indigenous Resource Management is proud to present the Second Annual Indigenous Film Festival, with four days of feature, short, and documentary films by and about indigenous peoples. In keeping with the theme for the 2005 Film Festival, Identity: Honoring Our People, Finding Our Path, the films look at the historical and contemporary political, religious, and social contexts in which traditional notions of race, gender, and culture have been and continue to be cast and recast. Black Tie Affair Features 100 Gentlemen Chefs
On Saturday, October 29 from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m., "Look Whos Cooking Now" - featuring a diverse group of 100 gentlemen chefs - will take place at the Renaissance Denver Hotel located at 3801 Quebec. Men from the community at large will prepare their mouth-watering specialties for the evening. Executive Chef Daniel Young of the Denver Press Club will host a food preparation segment ala "Iron Chef," assisted by on-air personality KO from Jammin 92.5 FM. There will be a silent auction and live entertainment will be provided throughout the evening by Phat Daddy Band, Linda Theus-Lee, violinist Jonathan Levingston, and DJ Al Your Pal. Gloria Neal of the Jammin 92.5 Morning Show will be the Mistress of Ceremony for the evening.

Nordstrom To Host Project Preview For Local Minority And Women-Owned Contractors
Nordstrom, Inc. (NYSE: JWN), will host a Project Preview event for its Cherry Creek Shopping Center store in Denver on Wednesday, October 5, from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the Inn at Cherry Creek located at 233 Clayton Street. The event is an opportunity for minority and women-owned businesses to learn more about the retailer's contracting opportunities. The 120,000 square foot Nordstrom store will open in the Cherry Creek Mall on September 22, 2006. Nordstrom is seeking subcontractors for the interior portion of the project, as well as vendors and contractors for construction supplies and materials. To be considered, a company must be licensed, bondable, and demonstrate private sector experience. Ending The Silence Conference To Be Held This Month
In an effort to address the medias failures on the conflict in Israel and Palestine, a major, two-day peace conference will be held in Denver October 21-22, at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church, located at 1980 Dahlia St. in Denver. This interfaith conference, entitled Ending The Silence: Working for a just peace in Israel and Palestine, will bring together nationally and internationally known lecturers, writers, and activists who are working for a just peace in Palestine and Israel. The program will include Jewish, Christian, and Muslim speakers, a wide range of workshops, and a Middle Eastern banquet on Friday evening.
