ABTP Presents Getting Money For College
The Alliance of Black Telecommunications Professionals, a Qwest Communications Diversity Resource Group, and the Community College of Denver continue their Getting Money For College lecture series. Part two of the three-part series will be Wednesday, March 7, titled Essay Writing Workshop, and part three will be Wednesday, March 14, entitled Interviewing Workshop. Both lectures will be held at 1201 5th St., suite 570 , from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m.  Parents, high school seniors and college freshmen are welcome, and refreshments will be provided.

Hurricane On The Bayou Showing At IMAX
The Denver Museum of Nature and Science presents the new film Hurricane on the Bayou, in the Phipps IMAX Theater on Friday, March 16. Hurricane presents one of the few stories about Hurricane Katrina that is left to be told in detail – the story of how the city of New Orleans might have been spared the wrath of the storm had the swamps and wetlands around the city not been devastated by years of environmental degradation. This movie is directed by Greg MacGillivray and narrated by Meryl Streep. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for juniors and seniors, with discounted tickets for members.

100 Black Men Of Denver Sponsors Night With Nuggets
The Denver Nuggets and the 100 Black Men of Denver will sponsor a night with the Denver Nuggets on March 9. Sponsor a mentor and attend the Denver Nuggets vs. Detroit Pistons game at 7 p.m. at the Pepsi Center , where you can see Carmelo, Iverson and Denver 's own Chauncey Billups. Tickets are $45 for both adult and youth ticket combined. A portion of tickets sales will be donated to 100 Black Men of Denver 's scholarship fund. AKA Sorority Inc. Accepting Scholarship Applications
The Epsilon Nu Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. is now accepting applications for its 2007 scholarships. Outstanding young women from area high schools are encouraged to apply for scholarship dollars to be used toward expenses at an accredited higher-education institution. The Zelma McIntosh Bell endowment will also be awarded to an outstanding young woman relative of a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Epsilon Nu Omega chapter. CCOA Announces 2007 Governor’s Arts Award
The Colorado Council on the Arts, together with Arts for Colorado , has reinstated the Governor’s Art Award with a new focus on Strong Arts Strong Communities. Since 1969, Governor’s Arts Awards have honored artists and organizations, as well as corporate and civic leaders, for their significant contributions to Colorado ’s cultural environment. One award will be given to a Colorado city or town which has effectively employed the arts to enhance the quality of life and economic vitality of their community. Nomination forms must be postmarked by March 19.

Benjamin Franklin Comes To DMNS
The Denver Museum of Nature and Science (DMNS) presents an atypical history and science exhibition called “Benjamin Franklin: In Search of a Better World” from March 2 to May 20. DOCA To Host National Arts Forum
The Denver Office of Cultural Affairs (DOCA) will host the second of two of the 40 National Arts Forum Series events, sponsored by MetLife Foundation. The forum is entitled Design Thinking: Success Stories, and will be held Wednesday, March 7 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the stage of the Buell Theatre, 14th and Curtis streets. The forum will address the connection between a creative built environment and a person’s ability to perceive; teach ways to enhance the ability to practice inventive thinking; give an opportunity to design an icon for Civic Center Park ; and inspire ways to enhance professional success by design thinking. Over the course of the last five years, the forums have established a clear record of achievement in communities across the United States , galvanizing conversations among and collaborations between arts and business leaders.

Zoning Code Task Force Hosts Community Forum
The Zoning Code Task Force invites the community to join in a community conversation to answer questions related to residential development and rezoning. The meeting will be held Wednesday, March 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Webb Municipal Office Building , 201 W. Colfax Ave. in Denver. A panel of representatives from the Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation, Denver Community Planning and Development Department, Denver Board of Realtors, and Homebuilders Association of Metropolitan Denver will discuss policies, procedures and effectiveness of various regulatory approaches. After the panel discussion, the forum will conclude with a question and answer session. Space is limited and reservations are required by March 2.

WWII Polish Fighter Descendent To Give Holocaust Lecture
Robert Bielsky, whose father and two uncles saved 1,200 Jews in the forests of Poland during World War II, will tell an absorbing and little known story of resistance and survival for the 5th Annual Fred Marcus Memorial Holocaust Lecture. The lecture, under the auspices of the Holocaust Awareness Institute at the University of Denver Center for Judaic Studies, will take place Sunday, March 18 at 4 p.m. in DU’s Driscoll Ballroom, 2055 E. Evans. Ave. When Bielsky is not traveling the world speaking of his family’s exploits, he serves as the president of the Holocaust Memorial Committee and serves on the Board of Director of the Associates Division of the Museum of Jewish Heritage , a living memorial to the Holocaust.

Wee Wednesdays At Denver Firefighters Museum
The Denver Firefighters Museum , 1326 Tremont Place in Denver , announces a new fire safety program called Wee Wednesdays. The program is based on a nationally acclaimed fire safety program for young children called Play Safe! Be Safe! Wee Wednesdays is a six-week series designed for children ages 2 to 5 years of age, and the play dates teach fire safety behaviors that make learning fun. This multi-media program will include group activities, role playing, videos, craft projects, and other activities. The cost is $5 per week and includes one child and a parent. Additional children are $2 each. The session is six weeks in length but attendance at all six is not required. The two remaining Wee Wednesdays are March 7 and 14.

Aurora Fox Presents Almost, Maine
The Aurora Fox Theater, located at 9900 E. Colfax Ave. , presents the regional premiere of the romantic comedy Almost, Maine , running through March 25, directed by Bev Newcomb Madden and featuring John Arp and Rhonda Brown. Almost, Maine was hailed as “Love in the Time of Frostbite” by The New York Sun , and fittingly so: playwright John Cariani employs elements of magical realism as he explores the mysteries of the human heart in this delightful romantic comedy. Almost, Maine is a small, mythical town in far northern Maine . On a Friday night in the middle of winter under a big sky, residents of Almost are falling in and out of love at an alarming rate. Read2Kids Day On March 3
The Junior League of Denver and Denver Firefighters Museum have teamed up to present the 8th Annual Read2Kids Day on Saturday, March 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the museum, 1326 Tremont Place in Denver . The two groups have teamed up to spend the day reading to kids in conjunction with the National Education Association’s “Read Across America” day. Join them as they read books on fire topics to visitors of all ages. The event is free to the public and children will participate in a variety of fun activities such as face painting and balloon making. Children will be able to take home a free book and tour the Museum with firefighters in uniforms.

Eighth Annual Multicultural Conference On Breast Health
The Denver Metropolitan Affiliate of the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation will host its 8th Annual Multicultural Conference on Breast Health on Saturday, March 10, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. , at the Renaissance Denver Hotel, 3801 Quebec St. in Denver . The conference is a one-day conference targeting minority women who lack access to life-saving information about breast health and breast cancer. All sessions are presented by experts in their field, with an emphasis on providing the information in a culturally appropriate way. Started eight years ago and growing each year, dedicated volunteers created the conference to address health disparities that exist within our community.

Free Public Library Events In March

Jackie Robinson Foundation Deadline March 31
Applications for the Jackie Robinson Foundation Education and Leadership Development Program are now available online at the foundation’s Web site www.jackierobinson.org. The foundation, established in 1973 to perpetuate Jackie Robinson’s pioneering legacy, provides four year college scholarships to minority students with records of academic achievement, leadership capacity, civic engagement and financial need. More than financial assistance, the Education and Leadership Development Program offers all Jackie Robinson Foundation scholarship recipients a comprehensive set of support services including mentoring, networking opportunities, career exploration programming and practical life skills training. Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholars may use the award at the four year college or university of their choice. Completed applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. eastern time (3 p.m. mountain time) on March 31.

From Tel Aviv To Rammalah At DU
The Center for Judaic Studies brings a unique one-man theatre experience to the University of Denver . From Tel Aviv to Ramallah will be held Thursday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Gates Hall in the Newman Center for Performing Arts, University Blvd. and Illif Ave. , on the University of Denver campus. From Tel Aviv is a collaboration between a Jewish "human beatbox," and the religion scholar who happens to be his wife, and a Muslim video artist - a genre-smashing, boundary-breaking "hop-hop travelogue to peace." DCPA Hosts Family Fun Forum
The Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) will offer a free Target Family Fun Forum on March 4 from 12 to 2 p.m. These forums are sponsored by Target and are offered by the Denver Center Theatre Academy , an educational department of The Denver Center for the Performing Arts. The forums are free events for groups where participants juggle, sing opera, recite Shakespeare and walk a tightrope among a number of other activities. Denver Parks And Recreation To Hold Hearing
Denver Parks and Recreation invites the public to attend and participate in a public hearing regarding a proposed departmental parkway policy on Thursday, March 8 from 6:15 to 7 p.m. as part of the March Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting. The meeting will take place at the Montclair Civic Building , located at 6820 E. 12th Ave. in Denver. CHUN Hosts UMX Auditions For People’s Fair
The public is welcome to come vote for their favorite acts at the Ultimate Music Xperience (UMX), a two-day battle of the bands with approximately 80 local, primarily undiscovered solo and group acts vying for a chance to play at the CHUN Capitol Hill People's Fair, one of the largest music venues in the state. Envision A World Without Drugs
Envision: A World Without Drugs is a youth exhibition of art designed to address healthy alternatives to the use and abuse of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. The exhibit opening night will be held Wednesday, March 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. , with a performance by Downtown Aurora Visual Arts (DAVA) youth directed by Jaime Lujan, at DAVA’s gallery at 1405 Florence St. in Denver . Art From Ashes is a spoken word, written, and visual exhibition featuring photography, poetry and artwork by Art From Ashes Youth. Art Exhibition: Children Of Niger
The art exhibition The Children of Niger is a 20-piece pastel series created by Louise Cutler while in Niger , Africa . The series documents Cutler’s stay in the village of Golmi , as well as visits to outer villages with a medical team in 1998. Some of the paintings were completed once she returned home, inspired from photographs taken while in Niger . The show will run through March 31 at the East Library, 5550 N.
