BAWM Holds Afternoon Tea
A mother and daughter (and sons, too) afternoon tea will be held July 28 at 1 p.m. at the Black American West Museum, 3091 California St. in Denver. The theme is Homeopathic Tea, a day in the life of Dr. Justina L. Ford, homeopathic doctor. The afternoon tea includes a private guided tour and family activities. Enjoy an afternoon with your children and learn about Colorado’s first African-American woman doctor. Sankofa Presents Quilts –n– Colors
The Sankofa Arts Alliance presents “Quilts -n- Colors,” an art show featuring work by Mary Madison, at the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library gallery, 2401 Welton St. in Denver. The show runs July 7-31 and is free and open to the public. There is no reception due to the Black Arts Festival. The library is open Monday through Wednesday from 10 a.m.-7 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library is closed on Thursday and Sunday.

Arvada Center Announces Summer Auditions
The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities (6901 Wadsworth Blvd.) will hold auditions this summer for the upcoming theater season. Auditions for Defiance, directed by Jane Page, will be held July 9 and 10 at the Arvada Center. Rehearsals begin Sept. 15, and the show opens Oct. 2. Auditions for the children’s musical Miss Nelson is Missing!, directed by Edith Weiss, will be held July 23. Rehearsals begin Sept. 5, and the show opens Sept. 25. Auditions for the musical La Cage Aux Folles, directed by Rod Lansberry, will be held July 31 and Aug. 1. Rehearsals begin Oct. 30, and the show opens Dec. 23. Actors should prepare a one-minute monologue appropriate to the period and style of each show. A headshot and a resume are required. No scripts are available through the theater. Birdhaus Bash Fundraiser Returns To DBG
The bids will fly on July 12, from 5:30 to 9 p.m., at Denver Botanic Gardens’ 13th annual Birdhaus Bash garden party and auction. More than 200 imaginative birdhouses be auctioned to the public. Many prizes will be awarded to artist ingenuity in categories such as Best in Show, Best Children’s and Best Celebrity birdhouse. All proceeds enhance the Gardens’ youth education programs. The 2007 collection will include birdhouses hand-made from community members, artists, local cultural organizations, architects, and dozens of celebrities including the Gardens’ Concert Series artists. Attendees will enjoy live entertainment by reggae band Jubal and the Rude Boys, and complimentary food and drink from the Wynkoop Family of Restaurants. DBG is located at 1005 York St. in Denver.

ECW Holds Christmas In July Fair

Colorado Dragon Boat Festival July 28 And 29
The 2007 Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, Denver’s premier summertime family event, will be held July 28 and 29 at Sloan’s Lake Park, at 25th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard in Lakewood. The festival celebrates Denver’s many thriving Asian/Pacific-American communities, from Japanese and Chinese to Laotian and Vietnamese, Filipino to Indian. There will be a marketplace, performing arts stage and the unique athletic competition of Dragon Boat Racing. As always, admission is free, and there will be free parking at Invesco Field with free shuttle buses from Invesco Field to and from the festival grounds all weekend.

Monkey See Monkey Do Carnival
The Capsule Art and Event Center and Self Made present Monkey See Monkey Do: A Do It Yourself Carnival on July 6 and 7 at the Capsule Art & Event Center, 560 Santa Fe Dr. in Denver. This event features some of Denver’s greatest minds and most creative individuals teaching you to do it yourself. There will be a variety of vendors, musicians, artists, craftspeople, performers, and thinkers of all kinds peddling their self-made wares, and teaching folks how to do it themselves. Summer Champ Camp For Kids With Asthma
This year marks the 28th anniversary of Champ Camp, the American Lung Association of Colorado’s weeklong summer camp for children ages 7-14 with moderate to severe asthma. Champ Camp 2007 will be held July 15-21 at Glacier View Ranch in Ward, Colo. Through fun outdoor and indoor activities such as ropes course, zipline, rock climbing, canoeing, and hiking, campers learn that asthma does not have to prevent them from living a full and active life. Campers and volunteers are being recruited. Financial scholarships are available for campers.

RFB&D Hosts Studio Tours
The Rocky Mountain Unit of the Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFB&D) is hosting studio tours every Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. from July 11 through Sept. 5. Stop by the studio, at 1355 S. Colorado Blvd., Suite C-406 in Denver, to check out their eight digital recording booths, learn about volunteer opportunities, see what it takes to become a reader, meet the students they serve, and more. RFB&D, a national nonprofit organization, was founded in 1951 with a mission to provide recorded textbooks to blind WWII veterans who wanted to attend college under the GI Bill of Rights. Since that time, they have provided more than 246,000 recorded books to nearly 117,000 individuals.

World Wide Antique Show Comes To Denver
The World Wide Antique Show heats up your summer at the Denver Merchandise Mart at I-25 and 58th Avenue on July 13-15. This show will feature a diverse selection of antiques and collectibles from around the world. While many dealers have exhibited for years and have a following, the show always included new dealers presenting a variety of antiques and collectibles, including books, dolls, postcards, unique art glass, quality linen and beds. Miners Alley Presents Not Now Darling!
Miners Alley Playhouse (1224 Washington Ave. in Golden) presents the West End hit Not Now Darling!, a comedy by Ray Cooney and John Chapman, and directed by Richard Pegg. The scene is the exclusive and elegant London fur salon of Bodley, Bodley & Crouch. Meet Gilbert Bodley, a flamboyant extrovert, and his partner Arnold Crouch, who struggles to keep things on an even keel. Gilbert has set his sights on a beautiful stripper Janie, and aims to seduce her with the help of a $10,000 mink. There’s just one catch: Janie is married, and her husband Harry would be sure to notice such an acquisition. Lakewood’s Summer Concert Series: Sounds Exciting!
An eclectic mix of musicians will perform this summer during the Eighth Annual Sounds Exciting! Summer Concert Series, Wednesday evenings from June 27 through August 8 at the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Amphitheater at Lakewood’s Heritage Center in Belmar Park, 801 S. Yarrow St. All concerts start at 7 p.m. and tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children. Gates open at 6 p.m. with free parking. Fridays In The Park Concert Series
The Denver Theatre District, in conjunction with the Soiled Dove Underground music venue, is launching Fridays in the Park, a music and visual art series at the Sculpture Park behind the Denver Performing Arts Complex. The concerts are planned for every Friday throughout the summer until August 17. Admission is free. Food and beverage will be available from a variety of local vendors who will have booths set up in the park.

Audio Picnic: 2007 City Free Concert Series
The Denver Office of Cultural Affairs announced the Audio Picnic: 2007 City Free Concert Series. This year’s line-up will feature 10 performances in the popular Skyline Park Lunch Concert series, as well as four Evenings in the Parks concerts. New to the series this year are local bands such as The Hollyfelds and Hot IQs, as well as “sideshows,” including speed knitting, colossal hopscotch and cup stacking. Highlights of the evening concerts include a Colorado Symphony Orchestra (CSO) Patriot Celebration on July 4th at City Park Meadow and a CSO performance at Red Rocks on July 8th. Movies In The Parks 2007
Denver Parks and Recreation presents the 2007 Movies in the Parks Summer Series. These free outdoor film events, located at parks around Denver, will take place every weekend (except the Fourth of July weekend) through Aug. 18. Films begin at dusk, and people are invited and encouraged to come early and secure seating and enjoy free entertainment before the film begins. At each showing, free popcorn, cotton candy and sno-cones will be available. Additional concession items will be available.

DAM Summer Exhibitions And Events
The Denver Art Museum has planned several summer exhibitions and events, including a temporary exhibition of vintage baseball photographs, a sneak peek at works by Clyfford Still, 17th century master paintings, and events ranging from video game adventures in the galleries to a weekend-long celebration of international art. Additionally, DAM is offering free admission to Colorado kids all summer long, and holding many daily family activities. cityWILD Offers Free River Rafting Rides
Every Saturday through August 11th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., cityWILD will be offering free river rafting rides on the South Platte River through the rapids at Confluence Park/Shoemaker Plaza, in front of the REI Flagship store, just upstream from the 15th Street bridge. This will be open to the general public, ages 8 and up (with written consent of adult participant and/or parent/guardian of minors). There is no charge for this activity, no reservations required. Participants/parents will only need to sign a waiver. Guides, equipment, and instruction will be provided, including cityWILD youth as guides.

Black American West Museum Summer Schedule 
The Black American West Museum offers innovative and fun adult and children’s programs all summer long. Join us for thematic afternoon teas, with topics like “Homeopathic Tea, Dr. Justina L. Ford, Colorado’s first African American woman doctor.” Did you know one out of three cowboys were Black? Learn about the Buffalo Soldiers and their role in settling the West. Learn about Five Points, too, and why it was called the Harlem of the West. Live Nation presents Beyonce at the Pepsi Center on Wednesday, Aug. 22. Robin Thicke will open the show. Beckwourth Summer Activities Rolling Round
Join the James P. Beckwourth Mountain Club for camping at the Pa-Co-Chu-Puk campground in Ridgeway State Park on July 19-23. Both RV and tent sites are available. Another camping site is the Elk Ridge Campground, nestled in a pine forest with lake views. Activities include visiting the nearby towns and attractions of Ouray, Silverton and Telluride, hiking, biking, fishing, swimming and boating in the park. 2007 Film On The Rocks Season
Film on the Rocks, now in its eighth season, is an incredible mix of live music, followed by classic movies people love to see again and again at Red Rocks Amphitheater. Nationally touring headline comedian Chuck Roy will host the series courtesy of Comedy Works. On July 3, the movie shown will be Dazed and Confused, with the band Coors New Sound Throwdown and Ash Ganley. On July 9, the movie shown will be The Big Lebowski, with the band Zebra Junction, with Comedian Josh Blue. On July 17, the movie shown will be Back to the Future, with the band Born in the Flood. On July 23, the movie shown will be The Shining, with the band Douglas Cameron. Zimbabwean Stone Sculptures Return To DBG
For the first time in three years, the “Chapungu: Custom and Legend; A Culture in Stone” exhibit returns to the Denver Botanic Gardens from July 11 through Feb. 29, 2008. The exhibit of 56 life-affirming, deeply spiritual sculptures celebrates diversity by bringing awareness to the depth and wisdom of many traditional African cultures. This highly expressive contemporary stone art, made by African artists from Zimbabwe, are up to 11 feet tall and weigh between 600 and 6,000 pounds each. These Zimbabwe stone sculptures are organized around eight themes that represent shared human relationships, emotions and experiences: Family, Custom and Legend, Social Comment, the Role of the Elders, the Spirit World, the Role of Women, Village Life, and Nature and Environment. Dive Into Art With Art Students League
With classes for beginning to advanced artists in drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking and mixed media, the Art Students League has classes for everyone and every schedule this summer. The Art Students League of Denver, celebrating its 20th anniversary in the community, is Denver’s premiere non-profit resource for teaching, creating, selling, collecting and supporting the visual arts. Avenue Theater Performance Schedule
The Avenue Theater (417 E. 17th St. in Denver) announces it summer performance schedule. The show I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, a musical comedy by Joe DiPietro and Jimmy Roberts, plays through Aug. 18. Love Perfect Change chronicles the history of human romance from the beginning of time through the end of eternity. Tickets are $16-$24. The Avenue’s Variety Show, “Radio Avenue,” is an audience-participation show that is broadcast the next day on KGNU 88.5 FM in Boulder, 1390 AM in Denver. The next show will be July 1, and is free. 2007 Playwrights Showcase July 18-21
The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities (6901 Wadsworth Blvd.) and Red Rocks Community College's Theatre Arts and Dance department present the 2007 Playwrights Showcase of the Western Region on July 18-21. RRCC will host the showcase on July 18 and 19, and the Arvada Center will host the events on July 20 and 21. The showcase was created to support the original works of playwrights living in 19 western states, and includes four full days of workshops and networking opportunities, along with special evening events. Thirty plays were selected for staged readings at this year's showcase. Day and evening sessions of original play readings will be followed by critical discussions with a panel of luminaries and guest artists. Attendees can purchase individual sessions, a full day of sessions, or the full event.
