DHA Honors New Members Of Hall Of Fame

The Denver Housing Authority (DHA) recently announced its newest members of the “DHA Hall of Fame,” which was launched as a way to honor and thank those who have made outstanding contributions to the Housing Authority and helped meet the goals of its mission. The “Wall of Fame” is permanently placed on the second floor, directly outside of the DHA Board of Commissioners Board Room for public viewing. The six honorees include:
Councilwoman Elbra Wedgeworth was selected for her continued advocacy for DHA constituents and residents of City Council District 8.
Mary Brockman was added for her commitment to serving public housing residents and ensuring that residents are included in DHA’s decision-making process.
Diana Rey was chosen for her outstanding leadership and unyielding commitment to providing quality services to the Quigg Newton community.
Jewel Hall (Posthumously) was honored for her leadership, advocacy and dedication to solving resident issues and improving public housing.
John D. Solma (Posthumously) was selected for his dedication to improving the quality of life for all residents by providing creative solutions and opportunities for residents.
Minnie Conict (Posthumously) was added for her leadership and commitment to improving services to low-income citizens and providing a forum for addressing resident concerns.

CWEE Announces New Director Of Development
Laura Rittmaster Gabbay
has been named Director of Development at the Center for Work Education and Employment (CWEE).  Gabbay brings 14 years of non-profit and fundraising experience having most recently been the director of corporate and foundation relations at the Allied Jewish Federation of Colorado.
CWEE is a non-profit organization (serving Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas and Jefferson Counties) working to help low-income adults prepare for, find and keep sustainable employment. In her role at CWEE, Gabbay is a member of the senior management team and is responsible for driving fundraising efforts and managing grant proposals.

Skyland Students Receive Daniels Scholarships
Courtney Allen Cole, Christopher Pride and David Taylor, three Skyland Community High School students, have been named recipients of the Daniels Scholarship, allowing them to attend any college or university in the United States on full “unmet need” scholarships.. Daniels Scholars are selected on the basis of financial need, academic promise, maturity, leadership potential, and the potential to contribute to their communities. In addition to tuition, room and board, Daniels Scholars receive a laptop computer, health benefits, transportation costs to and from the university, and caring support while they are in college.

Local Physician Named To 50 Most Powerful Physician Executives List
Patricia A. Gabow, M.D., chief executive officer and medical director at Denver Health, was recognized as one of the 50 Most Powerful Physician Executives in Healthcare 2006, by Modern Healthcare magazine in its April 24th issue. Gabow, who is also a professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, was one of only four women named to the list. 

DPL Commission Announces New City Librarian
The Denver Public Library (DPL) Commission, announced that Shirley C. Amore will serve as Denver’s new City Librarian, and, as such, will direct Colorado’s largest library system. Amore, who currently is the executive director of community services for Sarasota County, Fla., becomes Denver’s first female city librarian. Amore is only the ninth person to hold the position since the library opened in 1889.

                                 

 

 

Denver Foundation Announces Hirota As New Vice President Of Programs
The Denver Foundation recently promoted Jeff Hirota from Program Officer to Vice President of Programs. Jeff joined the Foundation as a Program Officer in May, 2003. Prior to that he served as a volunteer on the Board of Trustees and the Strengthening Neighborhoods Committee of The Denver Foundation for several years. 

African-Centered Charter School Graduates 18 Students
Challenges, Choices, and Images, Charter School (CCI), Denver’s community-focused, African-centered K-12 charter school held its graduation ceremonies at the King Center. Eighteen seniors from the Denver metropolitan area graduated, CCI’s largest graduating class in its five year history as a charter school. Each of the graduates has been offered admission to a college or university for the next school year.

District Judge Larry Naves Appointed As New Chief Judge In Denver
Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Mary Mullarkey has appointed District Court Judge Larry J. Naves as the new chief judge in the Second Judicial District. Naves will assume the position on July 1. “Judge Naves will be a strong, effective leader of the Denver District Court.  I look forward to working with him,” said Mullarkey. In his 20 years on the bench, Judge Naves has handled all types of civil, domestic and criminal cases. He presently serves in the civil division.

Mayor Hickenlooper Announces New Director Of Corrections And Undersheriff
Mayor John Hickenlooper announced Denver Sheriff Department Division Chief William R. Lovingier as the new Director of Corrections and Undersheriff for the Department. Division Chief Lovingier was named Acting Director of Corrections while the City conducted a national search to fill the position. In recent years, he has been the Department’s lead representative on the Denver Justice Center project.
 
Mayor Hickenlooper Announces New Deputy Director Of Denver Office Of Economic
Development
Mayor John Hickenlooper has named the City’s Workforce Development Director Cecilia “Cec” Ortiz as the new Deputy Director of the Denver Office of Economic Development. Ortiz has more than two decades of experience working with workforce training, human resources management, and community/economic development issues for both the public, private and non-profit sector. Appointed by Mayor Hickenlooper to head Denver’s Workforce Development Division in 2003, she spearheaded the Division’s move toward a market-driven system.

Munn Recognized As A "Colorado Super Lawyer"
Rico Munn was among the seven Baker Hostetler lawyers in Denver selected as 2006 "Super Lawyers" and listed in the current editions of the Colorado Super Lawyers and 5280 magazines. "Super Lawyers" is a comprehensive and diverse listing of outstanding attorneys representing a wide range of practice areas, firm sizes and geographic locations. The selection process is designed to identify attorneys who have
attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The 2006 lists are based on surveys of thousands of lawyers and only the top five percent of lawyers, from nearly 60 practice areas, are named "Super Lawyers."

Inner City Health Center Chosen Nonprofit Of The Year By Denver Chamber
At its 2006 Business Awards Luncheon, the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce presented the Nonprofit of the Year award to Inner City Health Center (ICHC). Kraig Burleson, CEO  accepted the award. The mission of Inner City Health Center is to provide health care for the whole person through five areas: adult medical care, prenatal services, pediatrics, dental services and counseling including emotional and spiritual. Located at 3405 Downing St., the original concept was to serve the Five Points area. Inner City Health Center has grown in numbers, as well as reach, while helping solve the health care crisis.
