Joint Center Names Everett As President And CEO
Washington, DC – The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, the nation's premier African American think tank, has appointed trailblazing Washington lawyer Ralph B. Everett to serve as its new President and Chief Executive Officer, effective Jan. 1. Mr. Everett will lead the Joint Center at an important time for people of color in America, with the number of black elected officials in the U.S. having grown to more than 9,500 and as African Americans prepare to assume the leadership of key committees in the new Congress. The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies was established in 1970 to provide training, assistance and research to newly-elected black officials. Today, its signature research focuses on disparities in health care, improving the socioeconomic status of black Americans and expanding their effective participation in the political and public policy arenas. Mr. Everett will succeed Dr. Margaret C. Simms, who has been serving as interim President and Chief Executive Officer.

Obesity, Lifestyles And African Americans
Eating is one of life’s greatest pleasures. The taste, smell, texture, and how it makes us feel can be a great source of satisfaction for us all. However, this very thing that is so pleasurable can be a danger to us if not kept in its proper place. We can enjoy food but the primary job for food is to nourish our bodies. When we don’t have the right balance of foods and don’t have adequate exercise we end up with “obesity”. Obesity is more common in African Americans than other ethnic groups. According to the CDC of Vital Health Statistics, 60.1 percent of African American males are overweight and 78 percent of black women lead the population in obesity and being moderately overweight. In order to get to a solution, we must identify the problems.

Black Women Give $10K To New Orleans Orgs
New Orleans, LA – On Dec. 10, the Zawadi Giving Circle, a non-profit group of African American philanthropists from New Orleans, presented approximately $10,000 in grants to local organizations. The grants include $4,800 to Medard Nelson Charter School for several students to have a year of intensive math tutoring with Kumon Learning Center; and $5,000 to start a prosperity club (savings program for low-income individuals) in partnership with Agenda for Children. Zawadi (Swahili for "gift") took hold in June 2005 around a kitchen table, as a small group of women discussed how the city they love was being washed away, well before Katrina. The friends decided to take on the mission of cultivating and leveraging resources to affect long-term, positive change in the quality of life for people of African descent in New Orleans.

Bill Cosby Supports Controversial Book
Hartford, CT – The highly acclaimed novel Man Up! Nobody Is Coming To Save Us has caught the attention and support of Bill Cosby and Rev. Al Sharpton. Each agree that it is a must read book for the community! Man Up! states that internalized racism is the number one reason why the Black community is filled with absentee fathers, mothers who raise their sons to be mamma's boys, bad eating, drinking and sexual habits, negative" thug" imagery, Black professional organizations mismanagement of resources, and opportunistic Black intellectuals. Nobody is supposed to talk about it publicly, and most Black churches stand idly by as the band plays on.
