Denver Pan African Film Festival Needs Volunteers

The Pan African Arts Society, is looking for volunteers for the 7th Starz Denver Pan African Film Festival, which runs April 24 to May 1. Available volunteer positions include: office assistant, communications assistant, ground transportation, youth project assistant, art design, publicity, theatre staff, VIP coordinator, and merchandise sales. Volunteers receive free movies passes, DPAFF merchandise, entry to parties, and opportunities to meet filmmakers and VIPs.

Sankofa Displays Children’s Art
The Sankofa Arts Collective “Children of the Sun II,” opens Saturday, April 8 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Blair Caldwell African American Research Library. The show is open from April 1 to April 28. Passover Freedom Concert Unites Jewish And African American Cultures
Judaism Your Way, a group that provides events, life-cycle celebrations and classes to unaffiliated Jews, interfaith couples and everyone in-between, presents "Let My People Go!," a freedom concert honoring Jewish and African American cultures on Wednesday, April 19 at 7 p.m. The concert will be held in the Davis Auditorium in Sturm Hall, at the University of Denver, 2000 E. Asbury St. “Let My People Go!” highlights the similarities between the story of the Jewish exodus from slavery in ancient Egypt and the African American fight for equality during the Civil Rights Movement. Free Events For Seniors
The University of Denver Daniel's College of Business and Seniors Inc. will host two free events featuring discussions on retirement and age-related issues from Denver's top financial, legal and health care experts. A senior citizens fair will be held on Saturday, April 8, from 9 a.m. to noon. A senior seminar series will convene every Friday, April through June, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. where valuable information on a wide range of topics of interest to seniors will be shared. The Mask Project
Cherry Creek Shopping Center and Hospice of Metro Denver announce The Mask Project 2006, will exhibit from April 1 to April 30.The Mask Project, an exhibit of more than 400 clay masks, hand-painted by local and national celebrities and artists, will be on display at Cherry Creek Shopping Center and is open to the public free of charge. Among the celebrity participants are Paul Newman, Jay Leno, Donald Trump, George Strait, Alan Jackson and Sarah Jessica Parker, There will be an ongoing auction and a gala on April 22.

Colorado Film Commission Hosts Benefit
The Colorado Film Commission will host “Seeing Purple,” a celebration of music, film, and life on Sunday, April 16 from 4:30 to 9 p.m. at the Esquire Theater, 590 Downing St. in Denver. Enjoy music by Boulder’s "Zebra Marimba" and short films by Colorado filmmakers, culminating with a presentation at 6 p.m. of Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple. 100 Black Men Of Denver Hosts Golf Tournament
The 100 Black Men of Denver will host its 6th annual scholarship golf tournament on Saturday, May 13, at Heritage Eagle Bend golf course in Aurora. Free Mammograms and Women’s Cancer Screenings
Tri-County Health Department is offering free mammograms, breast exams, Pap tests and pelvic exams to qualifying women. Cancer screening clinics are held every Thursday in various locations including Aurora, Castle Rock, Commerce City, Englewood, Northglenn and Thornton. In order to qualify, a woman must be 50 to 64 years old, live in Colorado, not have health insurance coverage for mammograms or Pap tests, not have had a mammogram or Pap test within the last 12 months, and meet income guidelines. The Colorado Children's Chorale Presents Spring Concert
The Colorado Children’s Chorale presents its Spring Concert…”what a picture!” featuring Pan Jumbies at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House at the Denver Performing Arts Complex on Saturday, April 8, at 7 p.m. Named after the song "Flash, bang, wallop…what a picture!” the Spring Concert presents a diverse repertoire of traditional to contemporary themes, leading the audience through ragtime classics out of New York City and heading south for the Caribbean with featured guest, Pan Jumbies, a well-known music ensemble combining steel pans and Calypso with soca, bass and percussion.

Colorado Children's Chorale Auditions
The Colorado Children's Chorale will be holding auditions for its training choirs from May through July at the Colorado Children’s Chorale office, 2420 W. 26th Ave., in Denver. For 32 years, Denver’s premiere, award-winning choir has brought its artistry and charm to audiences throughout the world. The 17th annual Colorado Salute to Seniors will be held on Wednesday, May 10, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Colorado Convention Center. The Salute features more than 100 information booths, giveaways, and two ballroom stage shows, starring Arthur Duncan, known as a tap dancer and singer on The Lawrence Welk Show. Children’s Museum Celebrates Month Of The Young Child
Throughout April, there are both messy and fun art activities such as creating “dot art” and “roller painting” masterpieces in Arts a la Carte. Also, children can feel the beat of fantastic music through their finger tips in Clubhouse Capers. And don’t forget this month’s “Super Science Sundays,” Bunny Trail EggVenture Saturday, April 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be creative arts activities, surprise visits by the Bunny, and Eggsploration stations where kids can create their own egg masterpieces. The Museum is open seven days a week, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday,10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Admission is $7 for ages one to 59, $5 for 60 and over, and free for children under one. A Dillard University/Katrina Fundraiser
Louis Freeman, co-founder and long-time manager of the renowned Hue-Man Experience Book Store, has joined Rise Jones of Inroads/Colorado, Inc., a Dillard parent, to sponsor a fundraiser for Dillard University, the most severely damaged post-secondary campus in New Orleans or the Gulf Coast. “A Call to the Village,” begins at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 8 in Davis Hall at the University of Denver’s Sturm College of Law. Dr. Marvalene Hughes, who began serving as Dillard’s first woman president on July 1, 2005 will keynote the event. Hurricane Katrina struck the University and the city at the end of the first week of classes. With the onslaught of water, fire and wind, the campus sustained 400 million dollars in damages.

International Food, Music, Fashion Feted At DU Festival Of Nations
The 23rd Annual Festival of Nations, hosted by the University of Denver’s international community, will celebrate music, dance, dress, food, and fashion from around the world on Saturday, April 15, from noon to 4:30 p.m., at the Driscoll Ballroom, 2005 E. Evans at S. Race St. on the DU campus. The DU international student community, which represents over 90 countries, will showcase their cultures. Highlights include an international fashion show, belly dancing, Bolivian dancing, a Kung Fu demonstration, and Lithuanian folk dancing. Ethnic food booths will showcase Chinese, Indian, Korean, Middle Eastern, and Indonesian cuisine. This event is free and open to the public.

DPL Announces 23rd Annual Rare Book Auction
The Denver Public Library will present its annual Rare & Not-So-Rare Book and Art Auction on Friday, April 28 at the Central Library. Each year, hundreds of community book-lovers come together to enjoy food, drinks and musical entertainment, while competing for unique treasures in silent and live auctions. Local celebrities will serve as live auctioneers to coax bids for prized rare books and art. Minimum bids typically start at $5. Standard tickets are $55 and patron tickets are $150. All proceeds benefit the programs and services of the Denver Public Library.

Youth Organization Hosts Dance Competition
Solid Confidence, a positive youth organization for teens between the ages of 13 through18, which fosters dance, art, and freedom of speech will be hosting a dance and step competition on April 7 at 7 p.m. at Rachel B. RMWI Presents Tangled Threads Exhibit
Rocky Mountain Women’s Institute will present Tangled Threads, an exhibition featuring work by six artists, writers and scholars. Girl Scouts Earn Horse Fan Badge At Colorado Classic Horse Show
Nearly 300 Junior Girl Scouts, ages 8 to 11, will attend the 30th annual Colorado Classic Horse Show on Sat., April 22 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the National Western Events Center to learn about horse care and showing horses to earn their Horse Fan Badge. Girls of all ages who are interested in joining the Girl Scouts may register and attend, and family and friends are welcome free of charge. Girls will watch the horse show while completing activities in a horse workbook they can take home. Girls can also win horse-related prizes, including free riding lessons, in a raffle drawing.

Dig Those Trees!
The Park People’s annual Denver Digs Trees Tree Sale will take place on Earth Day Saturday, April 22 at six distribution sites across Denver, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. If supplies last, a tree sale extension will take place at Washington Park the next day, Sunday, April 23 from 9 a.m. to noon. 
Bare root trees will be priced at $45 per tree, while balled and burlapped varieties will be $65. All trees will be one to one-and-a-quarter inches in diameter.

Westminster Artist Housing Survey Now Underway
The City of Westminster is investigating the potential to create an affordable community where creative workers and their families may live and work. Part of this effort involves conducting a study of the space needs of artists along the Front Range who are working full-time or part-time in creative professions such as visual arts, music, theatre, literature, film and other artistic pursuits. All persons interested in the subject of the survey are invited to participate. After the conclusion of the survey, the results will be presented in a public meeting in June, as well as in a final report.

Animation Intensives
Four-day animation intensive workshops, beginning on June 19, are being offered for kids 6 to13. Children will learn about animation styles by watching film clips, with hands-on experience creating animation flipbooks and in working with clay to create characters for a collaborative film. The kids will also focus on drawing and recording audio narration for their own 15 to 25 second animated short film. Each child will receive a DVD film of the work created during the Animation Intensives, which will premiere at PlatteForum¹s Animation Festival on July 21.
The cost is $75 per student.

Introduction To Animation
Beginning June 15, a half day introduction to animation class will teach kids about different kinds of animation by watching film clips, creating a short animation flipbook and clay characters to be included in a collaborative film. SMOC Offers Free Homeownership Workshop
Single Mothers of Color (SMOC) and Wells Fargo Home Mortgage will present a free two-hour workshop on homeownership. “SMOC Homeownership 2010, New Home for the New Year” will be held on Saturday, May 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Blair Caldwell African American Research Library, 2401 Welton. Dance Competition Kicks Off
A tribute to stepping and dancing will be held from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, April 28 at North Middle School, 12095 E. Montview Blvd. in Aurora. This dance contest is open to elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, private studios and special groups. The winner will receive a trophy and a cash prize of $100. Second and third place teams will receive trophies. All proceeds go to the NMS Drill Team, Dance, Team and Hip Hop Team.

Conference On Genocide And Crimes Against Humanity Opens 
The Colorado Coalition for Genocide Awareness and Action is sponsoring a conference titled “Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity: Challenges and Actions on Monday, May 8, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Adams Mark Hotel,1550 Court Place, culminating with a rally at 4:30 p.m. at the Colorado State Capitol. The goals of the conference are to educate Coloradoans about genocides past and present, to eradicate complacency, and to save Darfur and help prevent future genocides. Conference fees of $50 for adults and $20 for students will include continental breakfast, lunch and conference materials.

Spring Eggstravaganza Kicks Off
The Fourth Annual Spring Eggstravaganza will take place at the Wildlife Experience on April 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Wildlife Experience is located at 10035 South Peoria St. in Parker. Guests of all ages may participate in springtime games and crafts. Children are given a colorful spring bag to fill with treats as they travel throughout the event.  
General museum admission is $7.95 for adults, $4.95 for children 2 to 12 and $6.95 for seniors 65 and older. Children under two and members are free. Admission includes entrance to all exhibits and participation in all Spring Eggstravaganza activities.

Lannie Garrett Spoofs Country Music
Lannie Garrett created and stars as Patsy DeCline (not to be confused with a singer having a similar name) in her tongue-in-cheek spoof of country music. The show is running at Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret through April 29. Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. In this side-splitting show, “Patsy" relates hysterical tales of her many husbands, her endless hit albums and her wild, bawdy adventures on the road.

The Day Of Caring Celebrates Silver Anniversary
The Day of Caring silver anniversary celebration will honor founder Sue Miller on Saturday, April 8, at The Cable Center, 2000 Buchtel Blvd. in Denver at 6 p.m.
Sue Miller, a professional fashion model who was diagnosed with breast cancer 35 years ago and started the Day of Caring in 1981, will sign her book, “I’m Tougher Than I Look.” The Kathy Morrow Jazz Ensemble will provide music.  Appetizers and dinner will be served. Therapeutic Gardening Helps Abused Children
The Rocky Mountain Children's Law Center will offer The Dandelion Project, a therapeutic gardening program for abused and neglected children in two gardens this summer: Curtis Park in Denver, and 92nd/Pierce in Westminster. Adult mentors are needed to help youth plant, tend, and harvest their gardens, as well as participate on field trips and special events. A six-month commitment, 2 to 3 hours a week, is required. Training begins in April  and gardening begins in May. No gardening experience is necessary. Referrals for children ages 6 to 15 who have been through the child welfare system or are in foster care are being accepted.

ADL Hosts Multicultural Cowboy Film Night
The Anti-Defamation League's Partners-In-Leadership Institute will present “Reel Cowboys: A Multicultural Cinema Roundup” on Thursday, May 18, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Starz Film Center, 900 Auraria Parkway, The event will feature three short films about cowboys who do not fit stereotypes: Song of a Jewish Cowboy, Beers, Steers and Queers and The Federation of Black Cowboys. “Reel Cowboys” will include a reception, movie and panel discussion.
